A Message from Jayne Amico - The President

Dear Friends,

Another summer season has gone by! The season was filled with heartache and triumph as the babies arrived with a multitude of injuries and conditions. It was a long season this year as I began feeding orphaned young in May and I was still hand feeding Cedar waxwings up until mid October. It was a great year for Cedar waxwings as they could be found breeding throughout the state!

As you may have noticed we have had a name change! Our mission statement has also been updated. The Recovery Wing is now officially Mount Vernon Songbird Sanctuary which we feel leaves no doubt as to our cause! Our mission statement now reads –Dedicated to the conservation of migratory songbirds through education, rehabilitation, and preservation of their habitat.

Currently the sanctuary is located on 4 1/2 acres of prime songbird habitat which one day will be left to the Audubon Society. Recently the possibility has arisen for the sanctuary to acquire an additional acre of land that borders the back of us. The land is important wetlands habitat, supporting a wide range of bird species, and is a fantastic opportunity to add this critical habitat to the sanctuary! The challenge will be how to finance this venture. Stay tuned for further updates!

Besides our annual benefit dinner and auction the fall mailing is our only other major fundraiser. As you can imagine donations were drastically down this past year. Our goal is to raise enough money to sustain us until the March benefit. I understand what difficult times these are as my husband and I have had our own share of hardships in this slowed-down economy. I hope that the conservation of migratory songbirds is a cause which you will continue to support however you can.

With your support Connecticut’s migratory songbirds will continue to have a sanctuary that will provide education, rehabilitation and preservation of their habitat. Anyone interested in supporting the land acquisition please contact me for further information.

Sincerely,

Jayne Amico

Join our group of volunteers that is growing bigger and better each year. There are many ways you can volunteer.  By volunteering at the center you will not only assist in the daily tasks but will have the oppurtunity to observe, interact and help care for all the songbirds. Transporting songbirds for people who cannot get them to us, transferring to or from another rehabilitator, or bringing a bird to the vet is a valuable service and greatly needed. Any assistance with fundraising is greatly appreciated. For more information email jayne@mvssanctuary.org
